What Proton failures look like

46,706 Proton tests on record carry the manual reference DVSA attaches to each defect. The most frequent problems were with axles, wheels, tyres and suspension on 34,146 tests (73.1%), with brakes on 25,812 tests (55.3%) and with lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment on 14,122 tests (30.2%). A test can fail on more than one thing, and an MOT can be failed on one defect while another is only advised, so these counts do not add up to the number of tests.

Narrowed down from the categories to the individual defects themselves, three come up on more than one test:

  • Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge

MOT inspection manual reference 5.2.3, in axles, wheels, tyres and suspension

Recorded on 12,616 of the 46,706 tests: 2,624 failures and 9,992 advisories or minors.

  • Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement

MOT inspection manual reference 5.3.4, in axles, wheels, tyres and suspension

Recorded on 6,978 of the 46,706 tests: 2,086 failures and 4,892 advisories or minors.

  • Oil leak, but not excessive

MOT inspection manual reference 8.4.1, in nuisance (emissions and noise)

Recorded on 6,540 of the 46,706 tests: 234 failures and 6,306 advisories or minors.

The same breakdown for individual Proton models: Proton Savvy (13,204 tests), Proton Gen (12,408 tests), Proton Jumbuck (7,432 tests), Proton Impian (2,358 tests).

Clauses are read from the manual reference at the end of every defect on the cached test records, and a defect shown here has to appear on at least two of them before it is named. The site-wide breakdown explains how that works and compares every make.
