What Toyota 4 Runner failures look like

2,757 Toyota 4 Runner tests on record carry the manual reference DVSA attaches to each defect. The most frequent problems were with axles, wheels, tyres and suspension on 1,670 tests (60.6%), with brakes on 599 tests (21.7%) and with body, structure and attachments on 525 tests (19.0%). A test can fail on more than one thing, and an MOT can be failed on one defect while another is only advised, so these counts do not add up to the number of tests.

Narrowed down from the categories to the individual defects themselves, three come up on more than one test:

  • Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement

MOT inspection manual reference 5.3.4, in axles, wheels, tyres and suspension

Recorded on 564 of the 2,757 tests: 146 failures and 418 advisories or minors.

  • Oil leak, but not excessive

MOT inspection manual reference 8.4.1, in nuisance (emissions and noise)

  • Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge

MOT inspection manual reference 5.2.3, in axles, wheels, tyres and suspension

Recorded on 344 of the 2,757 tests: 50 failures and 294 advisories or minors.

Where there is enough data to compare: Toyota Yaris (4,576,675 tests), Toyota Aygo (2,325,946 tests), Toyota Auris (1,589,742 tests), Toyota Prius (1,451,121 tests), every Toyota model (17,235,592 tests).

Clauses are read from the manual reference at the end of every defect on the cached test records, and a defect shown here has to appear on at least two of them before it is named. The site-wide breakdown explains how that works and compares every make.
