What Saab failures look like

786,631 Saab tests on record carry the manual reference DVSA attaches to each defect. The most frequent problems were with axles, wheels, tyres and suspension on 587,269 tests (74.7%), with brakes on 315,841 tests (40.2%) and with lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment on 182,833 tests (23.2%). A test can fail on more than one thing, and an MOT can be failed on one defect while another is only advised, so these counts do not add up to the number of tests.

Narrowed down from the categories to the individual defects themselves, three come up on more than one test:

  • Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge

MOT inspection manual reference 5.2.3, in axles, wheels, tyres and suspension

Recorded on 213,109 of the 786,631 tests: 40,174 failures and 172,935 advisories or minors.

  • Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement

MOT inspection manual reference 5.3.4, in axles, wheels, tyres and suspension

Recorded on 154,599 of the 786,631 tests: 45,211 failures and 109,388 advisories or minors.

  • Oil leak, but not excessive

MOT inspection manual reference 8.4.1, in nuisance (emissions and noise)

Recorded on 115,777 of the 786,631 tests: 3,744 failures and 112,033 advisories or minors.

The same breakdown for individual Saab models: Saab 9 (707,371 tests), Saab 900 (31,566 tests), Saab 9000 Cse (4,361 tests), Saab 9 3 Vector 150 Bhp (2,430 tests).

Clauses are read from the manual reference at the end of every defect on the cached test records, and a defect shown here has to appear on at least two of them before it is named. The site-wide breakdown explains how that works and compares every make.
