What Mitsubishi Challenger failures look like

2,803 Mitsubishi Challenger tests on record carry the manual reference DVSA attaches to each defect. The most frequent problems were with axles, wheels, tyres and suspension on 2,549 tests (90.9%), with brakes on 1,569 tests (56.0%) and with body, structure and attachments on 1,312 tests (46.8%). A test can fail on more than one thing, and an MOT can be failed on one defect while another is only advised, so these counts do not add up to the number of tests.

Narrowed down from the categories to the individual defects themselves, three come up on more than one test:

  • Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material

MOT inspection manual reference 1.1.11, in brakes

Recorded on 855 of the 2,803 tests: 154 failures and 701 advisories or minors.

  • Oil leak, but not excessive

MOT inspection manual reference 8.4.1, in nuisance (emissions and noise)

Recorded on 824 of the 2,803 tests: 35 failures and 789 advisories or minors.

  • Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement

MOT inspection manual reference 5.3.4, in axles, wheels, tyres and suspension

Recorded on 807 of the 2,803 tests: 174 failures and 633 advisories or minors.

Where there is enough data to compare: Mitsubishi L200 (779,603 tests), Mitsubishi Outlander (649,242 tests), Mitsubishi Colt (329,977 tests), Mitsubishi Shogun (325,355 tests), every Mitsubishi model (3,226,105 tests).

Clauses are read from the manual reference at the end of every defect on the cached test records, and a defect shown here has to appear on at least two of them before it is named. The site-wide breakdown explains how that works and compares every make.
