What Daf failures look like

10,651 Daf tests on record carry the manual reference DVSA attaches to each defect. The most frequent problems were with nuisance (emissions and noise) on 137 tests (1.3%), with axles, wheels, tyres and suspension on 88 tests (0.8%) and with steering on 78 tests (0.7%). A test can fail on more than one thing, and an MOT can be failed on one defect while another is only advised, so these counts do not add up to the number of tests.

Narrowed down from the categories to the individual defects themselves, three come up on more than one test:

  • Oil leak, but not excessive

MOT inspection manual reference 8.4.1, in nuisance (emissions and noise)

Recorded on 137 of the 10,651 tests: 6 failures and 131 advisories or minors.

  • Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge

MOT inspection manual reference 5.2.3, in axles, wheels, tyres and suspension

Recorded on 88 of the 10,651 tests: 14 failures and 74 advisories or minors.

  • Track rod end ball joint has slight play

MOT inspection manual reference 2.1.3, in steering

Recorded on 78 of the 10,651 tests: 16 failures and 62 advisories or minors.

Clauses are read from the manual reference at the end of every defect on the cached test records, and a defect shown here has to appear on at least two of them before it is named. The site-wide breakdown explains how that works and compares every make.
