What Beta failures look like

12,758 Beta tests on record carry the manual reference DVSA attaches to each defect. The most frequent problems were with axles, wheels, tyres and suspension on 2,771 tests (21.7%), with lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment on 1,548 tests (12.1%) and with brakes on 1,033 tests (8.1%). A test can fail on more than one thing, and an MOT can be failed on one defect while another is only advised, so these counts do not add up to the number of tests.

Narrowed down from the categories to the individual defects themselves, three come up on more than one test:

  • Wheel bearing has slight play

MOT inspection manual reference 5.1.3, in axles, wheels, tyres and suspension

Recorded on 1,194 of the 12,758 tests: 301 failures and 893 advisories or minors.

  • Shock absorbers has light misting of oil

MOT inspection manual reference 5.3.2, in axles, wheels, tyres and suspension

Recorded on 642 of the 12,758 tests: 111 failures and 531 advisories or minors.

  • Reflector missing

MOT inspection manual reference 4.8.2, in lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment

Recorded on 608 of the 12,758 tests: 213 failures and 395 advisories or minors.

The same breakdown for individual Beta models: Beta Rr (5,864 tests), Beta Xtrainer (3,093 tests), Beta Evo (1,273 tests), Beta Alp (1,058 tests).

Clauses are read from the manual reference at the end of every defect on the cached test records, and a defect shown here has to appear on at least two of them before it is named. The site-wide breakdown explains how that works and compares every make.
